I wrote The Participatory Museum for two reasons: to explore the "how" of participatory design in museums, cultural centers, libraries, and science centers to create a version of this blog that was more "shareable" with organizational leaders and trustees By many measures, the book has been a success.

This month brings three examples of museums hosting meetups for online communities: On 8.6.08, the Computer History Museum (Silicon Valley, CA) hosted a Yelp! Several libraries have started to offer gaming nights where you can drink soda and play Wii to your heart's content. event, the Computer History Museum had 15 reviews on Yelp!

I used the example of two very different exhibitions that solicited visitor-contributed content: Playing with Science at the London Science Museum, and MN150 at the Minnesota History Center. The Minnesota History Center team solicited visitor nominations for exhibition topics and then built an exhibition out of those contributions.

For those who haven't attended, the Museums and the Web conference brings an international audience from art, history, cultural, and science museums together to talk about new ways to engage with their audiences via the web. The Walker Art Center is turning its teen website over to the teens.

They were a rich collection museum with some local history—they had many dolls, a famous toy collection. Which is really much closer to the library, which is why I know something about study storage, because individual quest is potentially there. So museums have stuff, and I want to dip in and out like I do at the library.

This was particularly directed at MN150, which featured visitor-nominated milestones of Minnesota history, and Children of the Lodz Ghetto, which invites users to conduct original research on the path taken by thousands of children during the Holocaust.
