After weighing all the options, and with a little help from some friends , we’ve decided to purchase Convio’s Common Ground.

At this point, there are two very different paths we can take: the new Nonprofit Starter pack from Salesforce, or Convio Common Ground. Disadvantages: In the past 2 years, Salesforce has introduced more updates that benefit organizations that have a traditional account<->opportunity model than I can count. Convio Common Ground.

Convio Common Ground already has a rather nice campaign segmentation tool which does this kind of “Show me everyone who is in Campaign A but not in Campaign B” type work quite nicely. For us, the criteria is based on the following: Lead Source: when a contact is converted from a lead (web-to-lead form from the website), the lead source is automatically inserted on the contact.

It’s been a little over a month since I signed on the dotted line for Common Ground , Convio’s Force.com application for nonprofit donation and constituent management. Between them and Convio, I feel like we’re in good hands. Last week, Convio updated their managed packages to version 2.0. for donations.

If I knew that I could make the switch from the old Salesforce nonprofit Starter Pack to Convio Common Ground in less than 6 weeks, I would have made this move months ago. It was always a struggle before differentiating when a gift was from an organization or entity, and when it was from a single person. Now it’s much easier.

It's been a little over a year since I fully deployed Convio Common Ground at the Colorectal Cancer Coalition. Afterwards, thanks to new upgrades from Salesforce aimed at developers like Convio, there was minimal configuration. Which brings me to the next great thing about Convio Common Ground: support. Still no regrets.

Huge for member-based organizations. As far as development changes go, I can’t wait to see what the folks at Convio can do for Common Ground with this update.
