Nonprofit consultant Hildy Gottlieb has been a vocal skeptic and is deeply philosophically opposed to online contests as a method of change in the social sector. Earlier this month, I sent out a few tweets asking for the counterpoint to Hildy's view.

I’ve had a lot of experience with online contests, both as a participant (winner) and working two reflection papers for the Case Foundation ‘s America’s Giving Challenge. I said that I wished contest designers would take a Hippocratic Oath to do no harm to nonprofits! Designate a cheer leader.

The intent is to create an annual national day of giving on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving or this year on November 27, 2012. The campaign will encourage philanthropic activities that support nonprofit organizations. Think about all those marathons or walking events for social causes that have been around before Facebook.

And don’t forget to use the hashtag #GivingTuesday to publicize your campaign and let supporters know about your involvement. Your supporters will need to opt-in to your text fundraising campaign by sending a specific keyword to your organization. And don’t forget to let your supporters opt-in to texts from your organization.

It’s a day that nonprofits frequently use to encourage additional giving from their supporters. . Social Media Support. Raise Funds on Facebook. Photo Contest. Draft the copy for emails promoting the campaign to each segment of supporters. . Each year, Giving Tuesday occurs the Tuesday after Thanksgiving.

For my 50th birthday, I held a 50th Birthday Card Photo Remix Contest on flickr and donated $50 the winner's favorite charity. An easy way to support the Nature Conservancy if you're on Facebook is to install (Lil) Green Patch. Or support an organization that does recycling. And, yes they did ! It's your choice.
