Not all leaders think that way, but organizations that value equity of access must consider the plights of those who might be systematically excluded from engagement efforts. Although we did not start with a particular emphasis on equity and access, this theme came up regularly in our conversations with the field.

And what if a person, regardless of age, could learn anything from typing to HTML to using an iPad without any cost or accessibility barriers? Libraries, nonprofits, and schools are already working hard to teach digital skills and competency, but they need support of the entire community to help people thrive in the technology age.

The broadband company, CenturyLink , is also building a gigabit fiber network in Omaha, so this is definitely a growing trend. The idea is to engage these residents and wherever possible to teach them how to use digital devices, provide Internet access through computer labs or classes, and provide them with very low-cost home computers.

AIF is definitely part of the social entrepreneurship movement with a results oriented culture that appeals to the tech entrepreneurs who are some of the main funders. The school has almost a dozen different social enterprises that provide access to these job skills. She's very sharp! The school is in its third year of the DE program.

We focus on political education and organizer skills trainings, and we definitely think it is critical to see the fusion of those two things. We definitely promote an organizing orientation to education work. And in terms of how I got involved with SOUL, I was actually teaching for a very brief period in the Oakland middle schools.

In the Merriam Webster dictionary definition featured in the Office Action, this is the third meaning of social: “advancing the welfare of human beings in society.” Social enterprise is descriptive. The term social enterprise is in common use globally to describe enterprises that have a social welfare intent.
