Last October, I had the pleasure and honor to visit the Center for the Advancement of Social Entrepreneurship (CASE) at Duke University’s Fuqua School of Business, to accept on behalf of Benetech the 2011 CASE Award for Enterprising Social Innovation (ESI). We are grateful for CASE’s recognition of Benetech's work.

Researchers who have studied diversity for decades argue that positive outcomes associated with DEI have less to do with financial performance than with values, culture, and the kind of experiences that employees have within the organization. Unless you are committed to making a cultural change, the question of DEI is moot.

A nonprofit organization, much like a for-profit company, is only as strong as its leadership. Businesses spent an estimated $12 billion in leadership development in 2011. From a funding standpoint, foundation support for leadership development was less than 1 percent of overall giving from 1992 to 2011 (Hirschfield, 2014).
