Part Vb:APIs October 20, 2006 This morning, I sat in on the " Great Open API Debate " hosted by NTEN. But I’m going to highlight what interested me most, and talk a little bit about the zen of APIs. Also, basically, what made an API "open" was that it was free to use, and well documented.

Other times it is more important to have an open API or an app that is properly designed for plug-ins or extensions. But it is annoying when something is trumpeted as open source but hasn’t been architected or documented in a way that would allow others to make practical use of the code).

The tech jargon (sorry, I tried): with the Winter release, Convio's Open API will support the Access-Control-Allow-Origin response header. By using this feature, Convio clients will be able to do things like, for example, use the API to display a list of your organization's upcoming events on your website. Oh, memories.

Here’s the details from TechCrunch : In case there was still any doubt that Google wants to use YouTube to host all the video on the Web, it’s announcement earlier today to broaden its APIs makes it clear that is its goal. Except that the new APis allow people to upload, watch, search, and comment on the videos on other Websites.

The biggest buzz here is about the API and the initiative they call Open. In addition to conections to Facebook, they have built connections to Raiser’s Edge (without the benefit of a Blackbaud API). He described how much easier it was to work with Salesforce, with a published API, than to work with Blackbaud.

I will write more about the API later, but everyone is really there to see the Facebook opportunity. My assumption is that you could custom build a Facebook application using the API, but if you wanted to use their Facebook connector, you would have to only have one. Interactivity. All the biggies will be there.

(it Actually, the twitter API only returns the last 1500 (I scrolled back as far as I could from the search tool).
