The internet is huge, there are literally countless platforms where people are forming community. The way I look at it, the issues and best practices are just as clearly linked to the idea of gardening as other community building approaches are in my previous post.

Marc Andreessen, who is, of late, connected to Ning, has a great blog entry with details. Google has a number of partners, including social network sites like LinkedIn, Friendster and Ning, as well as Salesforce, which does have very interesting implications given the increasing use of Salesforce in the nonprofit sector.

Don’t use Ning, use Elgg. This was the year for twitter. This was the year that nonprofits discovered twitter, and the year I integrated twitter into my workflow. Adobe Air is an impressive framework for rich internet applications. Elgg is the open source social network management system. Stay tuned.

Megan posts the really tough questions on our Donate Your Brain blog and on TechSoup's Twitter feed , both of which have steadily developed hundreds of readers all over the world. He told me that a few months ago, they'd set up a social networking hub on Ning for friends and constituents of the organization to connect with each other.
