Marc Andreessen, who is, of late, connected to Ning, has a great blog entry with details. Google has a number of partners, including social network sites like LinkedIn, Friendster and Ning, as well as Salesforce, which does have very interesting implications given the increasing use of Salesforce in the nonprofit sector. Kind of like if Ning , Google Talk , Gmail , Twitter and Facebook got smooshed together into a single open source environment. As for Twitter, I think that works because what can be lower maintenance than SMS or a single simple column of short messages? I don’t want the Internet to just throw data at me.

Think a whitebox version of Ning, or Facebook. What do these tools allow you to do? They allow you to create stand-alone social networks. Elgg, a LAMP(hp) project, started it’s life as a learning platform with social network features, but has transmorgrified into a social network platform with learning features. 3 Takeo 04.28.09
