If you feel that your audience needs monitoring or social support, position the talkback stations in open settings. Placing feedback stations in the open lowers the probability of socially inappropriate behavior, and it also allows parents and teachers to help struggling visitors answer the questions at hand.

I still talk to lots of folks, mostly young staff members, who are struggling to find ways to feature visitors' voices and break down standard authoritarian design structures. There is funding. Structure the space with a clear story (and commensurate rules). Structure means context, and context means norms that people can easily grasp and deal with. Exclusivity helps. Social networks are unsafe when they are launched without oversight, facilitation, structure, or community development plans.

Our museum in Santa Cruz has been slammed by those who believe participatory experiences have gone too far. We always knew that the inclusion of participatory and community-centered practices in arts institutions was controversial. To me, the backlash against participatory and community-centered experiences is not surprising.
