The event involved over fifty artists throughout the building helping visitors make their own paper, write poems, stitch books, etc. We don't yet know how people will respond to the emails, and we have some kinks to work out with the booth and camera setup. It accomplished several things at once: It drew people in.

So, the organization created a space specifically for the younger people in their community to nominate causes and have agency over some of the grantmaking decisions. I had lots of creative formats for drawing people out, sharing stories, and working collaboratively. Invite people into participation. When participants are diverse, explicit rules help. These kinds of rules have the surprising dual effect of helping people know what to expect AND making events more memorable.

The Leading Change Summit was more intimate (several hundred people), participatory and interactive, intense, and stimulating.
