Our hearts go out to the people of Japan. Geolocation tools like Ushahidi and data collaboration tools like Sahana were used in Haiti to help responders.

Ushahidi, an open source project originally deployed in Kenya to report post-election violence has since been downloaded and deployed for many other events and disasters, including Haiti, Chile, and Japan. They don’t necessarily think they need an organization in order to make an impact. Another great example is Epic Change.
