NEW YORK – March 8, 2010 – In the aftermath of the 8.8-magnitude earthquake that struck off the coast of Chile, nonprofit organizations raced to mobilize aid and plan recovery efforts, while also raising resources and funds to support their humanitarian programs in Chile. In response, AmeriCares, Catholic Relief Services and Habitat for Humanity have expanded their use of SMS and mobile marketing beyond just text-to-give to include critical, informational updates on their relief efforts to donors, as well as to bring new supporters into their organizations.

Whether we look at mapping tools, fundraising, or missing person systems, the social media response to the January earthquakes in Haiti all leverage the powerful technology we can hold in our hands: our mobile phones. The disaster in Haiti is a perfect example of these changes: the impact of the Real-Time Web and the power of our phones.

Many nonprofits, including several of TechSoup's member organizations, are working hard to bring aid to earthquake victims in Haiti. It's dangerous work, and these organizations will need a lot of help to get operations in Haiti up and running (or up and running again, as many of our member organizations had offices in Haiti before the quake).
Fortunately, several of TechSoup's donation partners have stepped up and either Microsoft has committed $1.25 million in relief funds, promised to match employee donations up to $12,000, and started several other relief

In a time of tragedy, it's comforting to see organizations using technology to deepen their ability to help those in need. The Extraordinaries and Ushahidi , two past NetSquared challenge winners, are working hard to help bring relief to people affected by the recent earthquakes in Haiti.
Organizations can set up missions and volunteers can complete them from the web interface or iPhone. The Extraordinaries is a great idea. Since most of the missions are simple, bite-sized tasks, it's a way to get volunteers involved without requiring a substantial time commitment.

The past 36 hours have been crucial for disaster relief organizations across the world as they reach out to supporters requesting donations, volunteers and general support for the efforts to help Haitians in need. And at a time when many organizations are moving quickly and may not have the time to outline a formal, full-fledged strategy for outreach, I wanted to share 7 best practices that can help any organization looking for guidance on how to make the greatest impact during such a devastating time of need.

TechSoup is united with the world in wishing a quick recovery to the people of Haiti after last week's devastating earthquake (and continuing aftershocks). Our own Tim Suttle was there only a couple of weeks ago volunteering for a local organization:
Just last week I was in [Haiti] to setup a computer lab at a library (Bibliotheque du Soleil). The library also hosts after school programs and summer camps for children in the neighborhood of Carrefour-feuilles. We have heard from the library director and a consultant who was working with me on the project but we are still

Last week in my post, Keeping Your Balance While Helping Haiti , I suggested that you research organizations working in Haiti that you would like to support by donating, volunteering, or helping in some other way throughout 2010. We need to support the people of Haiti now, but also in the future, when the hard work of rebuilding begins. Although I have a particular interest in grassroots organizations, I decided to donate to a large organization, CARE . CARE is a humanitarian nonprofit that works in poor communities.

The images and stories coming out of Haiti are disturbing, upsetting, and unbelievably heartbreaking. Organizations are using social media to raise more money faster than ever before.
