Beneblog: Technology Meets Society

I'm in Oxford, at the Skoll World Forum on Social Entrepreneurship. It's been pretty cool for me, here at the Forum. As a Skoll grantee, we got to do some exciting pre-Forum stuff. The first night, we had a dinner in Exeter College. Apparently, Tolkien studied here as an undergraduate. The dining hall looked like a smaller version of the Harry Potter Hogwarts dining hall set!

Mommy went to the NTC/N-TEN Conference and we got.

Beth's Blog: How Nonprofits Can Use Social Media

I spent last week in Chicago at the NTC Conference hosted by N-TEN. I coordinated the Day of Service. I always bring back the kids a little something from my work trips (Mommy guilt), but this year to my delight Hedgehog Hosting was distributed furry, little hedgehogs (not real ones). Maybe two minutes after I walked through the door and barely dropping down my suitcase, my children, Harry and Sara asked in tandem "Did you bring us a present?

Ain't Misbehavin'

Michael Stein's Non-profit Technology Blog

Well, some folks are. Reading my clipping services from Google Alerts the other day, I see an office manager for a YMCA coping a plea bargain for embezzling 25K from her employer. One of the jobs of software like ours is to place a few hurdles in front of people trying tricks like this. These hurdles - barricades that auditors simply refer to as internal controls - involve business procedures that make everything a little harder for everyone. but much harder for the bad guys.

Beneblog: Technology Meets Society

I am in the middle of a big travel sequence. Last week, I attended the N-TEN Nonprofit Technology Conference , which is where nonprofit techies get together and talk about how technology can make the best impact on the social sector. The highlight of the conference for me was getting to sit down and spend an hour with Esther Dyson, talking about some new nonprofit concepts.

I just completed a short paper on Google Print Accessibility. The potential of the huge scanning effort Google Print is undertaking is especially exciting for the community of people with print disabilities. However, we need to get Google thinking about this (they are now) and get the publishers and libraries to provide Google with permission to make this information accessible.

The Dirk Award

Beth's Blog: How Nonprofits Can Use Social Media

The "Dirk Award" now has its own web page ! There is a history of the award, past recipients, and how it all got started: The Dirk Award dates back to the RoundUp meeting in Kansas City, USA in 2000. There, a small group of U.S. circuit riders decided, during a drunken night of debauchery, that it was time for the rider community to celebrate its accomplishments.
