Platforms break open!

Zen and the Art of Nonprofit Technology

At first blush, although Kintera officially got out the door first, announcing Connect weeks ago, and delivering the APIs and docs on Friday, their play is a good start, but Convio, announcing Open tomorrow, appears to be ahead in terms of providing real openness. Kintera’s Connect has an API that can do some very important things.

SaaS vs. Open Source

Zen and the Art of Nonprofit Technology

Constant Contact (a SaaS provider of email delivery) uses IBM DB2. Kintera uses something proprietary, as well as Convio. Yes, there are licensing fees, but they pale in comparison to what it would cost if we had to rely on an open source product and maintain it ourselves. Other companies in the NP space are similar.
