Mass texting, or SMS (Short Messaging System) are generally 160-character–long messages that are sent, as the name would suggest, en masse. We love SMS because it boasts a 99% open rate, and users are more likely to respond. And with the advent of numerous SMS tools, so too comes the advent of free mass texting for nonprofits. Well, free-ish.

Delivered when mailed Clearly, if the donor had mailed cash, she wouldn’t be able to get the money back once she’d dropped the envelope stuffed with bills into the mailbox. If the check sent via private carrier arrived before December 31st, the donor’s deduction would fall in that calendar year. But it’s a bit tricky.

Supporters either send a donation amount to be charged to their mobile carrier (text-to-give) or are sent a link to your online donation form (text-to-donate) where they can submit a gift. With a text-to-give or bill-to-carrier campaign, donors text in a donation amount, which is applied to their next phone bill.
