Last month, the Japan earthquake and tsunami occurred on March 11th 2011, the first day of the conference. That morning, I saw the jaw-dropping photos and videos from the Japan tsunami disaster. Meanwhile, bloggers Leigh Duncan and Deb Ng were starting a grassroots effort to raise awareness and support for the Japan disaster too.

This form of poetry has risen in popularity in the west, though it has come a long way from its beginnings in feudal Japan. No matter the topic, Haiku spans the linguistic divide as a universal form of artistic expression. Traditional Japanese Haiku tended to focus narrowly on nature, whereas modern Haiku take on a bevy of topics.

After going to Amoeba, we visited a few artists' studios as part of the East Bay Open Studios , including the Institute for Mosaic Arts. Had great chat with Samin Nosrat for the Big Vision Podcast about her work with Bakesale for Japan and Eating for Education. I haven't stopped listening to it since. Soooo good. Very inspiring woman.

An educator at the Met recently told us of a group of visitors from Japan that joined a gallery tour and promptly asked to see the works of art featured on Smarthistory. I think about how hesitant I was to become an artist, because I didn't see role models, and even to this day how hard it is for me sometimes to find peers who are women of color, because of how systematically they are pushed out. I'm an artist and an institution builder. The kind of art I do is art that gets engaged into the public.
