In fact, I think MySpace is probably the best online representative of our society in terms of race and class that exists on the Web today, but it is incorrect to assume that MySpace is only a community of poor people. This summer, we opened two exhibitions at my museum that are highly relevant to local culture. One is about the Grateful Dead ( Dear Jerry ), the other about the dawn of surfing in the Americas ( Princes of Surf ). These two pieces of wood are like the Shroud of Turin of surfing in the Americas. Substantive programming.

I've learned so much from my dad about making art, putting on a great show, inviting audience participation , and navigating celebrity. I loved the piece. Here's that chapter. This literally takes them from below the poverty line into the middle class. It took us about 15 years in America before cell phones actually took off, and people started buying a cell phone.

So, we have been working very hard with the City Council, and with community colleges and local labor unions and others to come up with a proposal that will start in September as an actual program called "The Green Jobs Corps." What the Green Jobs Corps will be, it will begin training urban youth, Oakland's youth, in the jobs of the future.
