I'd always assumed that more representation is better than less representation, more press is better than less press, more sharing and engaging is better than the alternative. The problem, of course, is when you choose not to participate, most people don't see it as a noble protest. Most people don't notice at all.

Two weeks ago, we inaugurated a Creativity Lounge on the third floor of our museum. It's a little living room in a lobby area that invites people to lounge on comfortable chairs, leaf through magazines and books related to art and Santa Cruz history, and generally hang out. Lisa was thrilled that her work was on display at the museum.

This week, the Denver Art Museum (DAM) opened a new temporary exhibition called The Psychedelic Experience , featuring rock posters from San Francisco in the heyday of Bill Graham and electric kool-aid. It is an incredible museum experience. The visitor is given a copy of her poster and the museum keeps a copy as well.

The museum was in huge financial trouble. but I felt like I didn't have any alternative formats to draw on. My expertise was on inviting strangers to participate in public settings like museums. I had lots of creative formats for drawing people out, sharing stories, and working collaboratively. Take the lead.

Some people are rightfully fearful of "dumbing down" their model for scale. Treating the museum as a community platform? I love asking people what they think the turkey and the bread is--especially folks who appreciate the MAH but aren't deeply involved. I've asked myself this a thousand times in the past month. Because they were a part of the experience rather than the focal point, they could impart an air of friendliness and participation without making people feel that they had to participate. In many museums, comment cards are currently the most "participatory" part of the visitor experience. In most institutions, the suggestions on comment cards don't get to the people in power. The suggestions have to be reasonably focused so that people can make comparative judgments.
