Erickson founded FORGE (Facilitating Opportunities for Refugee Growth and Empowerment) in 2003 when she was a 20 year-old junior studying public policy at Stanford University. FORGE serves 60,000 refugees in three different refugee camps in Southern Africa, and is an official operating partner of the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR ).

Self-Help Africa needed a single source of truth to more effectively manage and measure their programs and services and, crucially, demonstrate the value of their programs to donors. Camfed , an international nonprofit organisation supporting girls in Sub-Saharan Africa to go to school, uses Salesforce to collect data more easily.

That said, in 2012 I had the opportunity to travel to Africa and Asia and from those travel experiences three themes emerged that inspired the selection of this year’s nonprofits: 1) Women’s and girls empowerment; 2) Conservation of wildlife and wild lands; and 3) Access to medical care.
