March 8th is International Women’s Day. It is an outrage that girls account for 74% of all new HIV infections among adolescents in Africa, and 40% of women on the continent suffer from anemia which results in 20% of maternal deaths. 2016 is the year that real money and reforms must start to right these wrongs.

That said, in 2012 I had the opportunity to travel to Africa and Asia and from those travel experiences three themes emerged that inspired the selection of this year’s nonprofits: 1) Women’s and girls empowerment; 2) Conservation of wildlife and wild lands; and 3) Access to medical care. We wanted to encourage them to find their voice, and to become leaders in their own right in their own local community. It really didn't matter to us. We didn't want to micromanage someone's passion.
