Ten years ago there was no Facebook, Twitter or YouTube. But now over 300 million people log-in to Facebook daily, Twitter supports over 50 million tweets per day, and 2 billion videos are watched every day on YouTube. Crowdrise came on the scene with a big splash in 2010. It’s amazing to watch technology evolve.

Whether you're hosting a walk-a-thon, charity auction, or soliciting online donations for an annual fund drive, the success of your fundraising campaign lies in the success of each of the individual participants. Provide online tools that allow them to engage with their peers by explaining why they personally chose to get involved.

Malaria No More has a track record of doing attention getting online fundraisers involving celebrities. In 2009 , Aston Kutcher challenged CNN (@cnnbrk) to a Twitter race to see which could reach 1M followers first. Ashton pledged to donate 10,000 mosquito nets to MNM if he got there first, and his pledge catapulted him to success.

There was one interesting model was asking for pledges, and if the pledges got up to a certain amount, the content would be produced. The problem of how do you fund the actual writing of content was not really addressed, and I think that is one of the harder nuts to crack. Be Helpful.

If your goal is to get countries to pledge to wipe out poverty, then your social media clickthroughs are just a means to an end. And you shouldn’t be either.
