See if they have good documentation. How do you go about finding out whether it’s the right software, and whether the project has a healthy community, since you don’t want to adopt a project that doesn’t? Check out the website. Make sure that the features that it outlines there match your requirements. How busy is it?

What are learning platforms?

Some, especially those that are very content/document heavy, have become familiar with Document Management Systems (DMS). There are both proprietary and open source LMS. There are open source LMS, some of which are quite well developed, and some also geared toward (or developed by) colleges and universities.
