More lately, I’ve been working to focusing my advising practice on helping people implement open source software (mostly server-side) in their organizations, providing advice and training. So, I did some research, and realized that the best choice for me was to get a Thinkpad – most everything works right out of the box.

In fact, pretty much every open source project that has gone commercial, or had a change in license, caused a fork, pretty much killing the original (like Mambo, or XFree86.) The major problem I found with ActiveCollab wasn’t open source vs. not but the fact that it wasn’t getting updated very often. Now I know.

June 24, 2008 I’m doing a webinar on Linux Desktops next month, and it’s making me think a lot about my own experience using Linux on the desktop, and where I think things are going. I have had varied problems , from issues of software integration, video problems, wireless issues … The list is getting very long.

For instance La Conner has been using thin clients since 2008, and recently installed an open-source integrated library system. Joy and Lane Fernando worked to together to set up the new 5-station donation: Server Computer: a Core 2 Duo Dell Optiplex Desktop. Windows MultiPoint Server Premium 2011 licensing. 1 USB Hub.
