I got a press release today from a PR firm promoting its client's plans to raise $1,000 for Thanksgiving meals and $5,000 for families in need at Christmas. While these are certainly laudable goals, I had a strong negative reaction. First, the message is spam. I have no connection to, and have never heard of, the charity or its PR firm.

Fast forward to a couple of years ago, and we''re forwarded a press release of a $5M gift to an out-of-state university, in which it says the donor is an alumnus of our university (the donor wasn''t an alum of the university that got the gift, but it was in his home community).

develop templates for proposals and contracts (Nolo Press is a great resource for contracts). Deal with legal and administrative stuff, such as: get a business license. publish your business name in the paper. get a Federal Tax ID. set up systems for tracking income, expenses, and invoices.

Nolo Press has some good boilerplate contracts. build in time for billing, organizing files, reading the trade press, watching webinars, etc. If you feel pressured or uncomfortable, it’s OK to say “I’m not sure; let me think about that and get back to you.&#. - do it ASAP.
