Jose sits on various economic development boards: the Oakland Workforce Investment Board, the Bay Area Business Advisory Board of Directors for the Consulate General of Mexico in San Francisco, and the OneCalifornia Bank Advisory Board. He came in the '70s when there was still the Bracero Program in Mexico. That's a good question.

Its a pretty good question, right? In our reflection session at the end of the last day, she wondered out loud to the group, "Even if I was able to help Zee by being a role model and helping her with her homework, was it really worth it?" It's a great question, and it doesn't apply just to ASB trips.

I think about how hesitant I was to become an artist, because I didn't see role models, and even to this day how hard it is for me sometimes to find peers who are women of color, because of how systematically they are pushed out. I decided that I was going to reach out to the mentors and the adults who I could learn something from.
