When I look back at some recent projects that I''m most excited about (like this teen program ), I realize that I had very little to do with their conception or execution. I''ve never worked in such a supportive, energized, active environment. Participatory work can be very labor-intensive. In the meantime, here are some.

A small room, packed with gadgets, packed with fossils, packed with tools, packed with PEOPLE everywhere making and exploring and building and learning. The people were of all ages--moms with babies strapped to their fronts, six year-olds using skillsaws, pre-teens building robots, teenagers doing homework. That taught us a lot.

Visitor Co-Created Museum Experiences This session was a dream for me, one that brought together instigators of three participatory exhibit projects: MN150 (Kate Roberts), Click! learning to enter open, personal relationships with participants. So far, most participatory museum design projects are heavily guided by the institution.

There's not a lot of work in pinball, and I had a deep secondary interest in unschooling and free-choice learning. At the big one, I worked on a small project with teens to design science exhibits for community centers in their own neighborhoods. I never pursued or wanted to pursue a graduate degree.

While there is much talk about supporting participation and making museum content relevant, the word "community" hangs like a poorly-defined carrot on a shtick. We're always happy for more bodies in the door, but if supporting teens means alienating seniors, there's a problem. Make food and drink and comfy chairs available.

The recent flurry of restrictions that has sent teens fleeing? Travel is a nice analogy; when people travel abroad, they often strike a different balance of engagement with strangers than they do at home, out of a desire to learn the culture, meet "real" people, etc. Tags: participatory museum visitors.
