The last two weeks of the contest, Amy and 10 others worked 8-10 hours a day blogging, emailing supporters, making phone calls, and recruiting teens and college students to help them towards gathering donations for the Cause. When people know exactly what their money is going towards, they feel most comfortable donating.

KickStart is a nonprofit that develops and markets new technologies in Africa that help local entrepreneurs to establish small businesses. If they don't have a way to make money, they can't access those things. So, a poor person's number one need anywhere in the world is actually a way to make more money.

This is my second year as a "sister," which means that I pay $27 a month to support one woman for a year while she goes through a program to help her rebuild her life after war. Another group is discussing their legal rights, and another group is learning organic farming. Another group is learning how to make tiles or bricks.

They learned about reproductive health issues, such as their anatomy, HIV/AIDS and sexually transmitted diseases, pregnancy and child birth. In small groups, the women learned basic business and marketing skills. Sponsors give $27/month to fund a survivor's basic needs, as well as seed money to start income generating projects.
