I tried to address the Smithsonian's particular challenges and opportunities while contextualizing it with lots of examples across different museum sizes and types. I am an impatient person.

What's a wiki? Wikis are websites that are extremely easy for anyone (even you!) The most well-known example is Wikipedia , a user-generated encyclopedia which boasts over 6 million entries written and edited by about 30,000 volunteer participants. Its success can distort understanding of what makes a wiki work.

This month brings three examples of museums hosting meetups for online communities: On 8.6.08, the Computer History Museum (Silicon Valley, CA) hosted a Yelp! They left with free tshirts branded with the museum's name (and other sponsors), wrote about it on a wiki and shared photos on Flickr. Projects participatory museum.

On the web, via the MN150 wiki, you can view the winning (and non-winning) nominations and additional historical content provided by the museum. This is a lovely example of a museum using its expertise to support and extend visitor interests, rather than lecturing or completely ceding control to visitors. It really worked.
