When smaller, place-based foundations collaborate and align their work, they provide unique value to local communities and nonprofits. Funder collaboration need not be burdensome, nor does it require perfect alignment. These informal collaborations usually consist of two to six foundations but can encompass a dozen or more.

If a government regulation changed or community preferences shifted, would you have time to react? If you are not prepared for the requirements, a government grant can create more problems than they solve.

The Red Cross has been around for 130 years and so much has changed – for example with text-to-give after disasters. Wendy : If nothing else, Millennials are collaborative. I think collaboration and turning organizations inside out is the way organizations will operate in the future. It has to be with the community.

Our organization plays an active role by convening our own network of corporate and nonprofit partners to discuss topics such as trends in corporate pro bono and disaster relief. We also participate in communities of practice ourselves and have observed some particularly successful collaborations over the years.
