Note from Beth: There has been a variety of criticism of contests. Nonprofit consultant Hildy Gottlieb has been a vocal skeptic and is deeply philosophically opposed to online contests as a method of change in the social sector. Earlier this month, I sent out a few tweets asking for the counterpoint to Hildy's view.

If there’s a sport that’s popular with your local community, jump at the chance to involve avid players, educate them about your organization, and raise money in the process. National “day” celebrations.

Participants raise money from their friends and family to support them in completing the walk or run. Parkinson’s Nebraska used the walk concept to inspire their Walk the State fundraiser, which asked participants to communally walk the distance it would take to cross the state of Nebraska.
