I didn't want to jinx it, so I didn't mention it in my book review of Wangari Maathai's memoir, Unbowed , but I finished the book last week because on Friday my husband and I flew to Los Angeles to hear Maathai speak at a fundraiser organized by the African Millennium Foundation. The Green Belt Movement was born.

I found out that the kindergartner I'll be working with likes pizza, the color green, pirates, sports and dinosaurs. We read a book together about tugboats before he went to lunch. In 2002, Eggers co-founded a writing center for young people, 826 Valencia, in San Francisco. 826national.org.
