Pathfinders for Autism started in 2000 when a group of parents of children with autism sought information and support following their child’s diagnosis. As parents of autistic children know, family outings can quickly spiral into stressful occasions. A trip to the National Aquarium in Baltimore, Maryland, saw 1,500 people visit.

Guests received haircuts while employees from a local Target store painted and updated the Shelter’s three-room common area. The Gift Shop also adopted the family for Christmas, asking community members to donate toys for the children.

Latino and Asian populations are expected to nearly triple, and the children of immigrants will become more prominent. Today in the United States, 25 percent of children under age 5 are Hispanic; by 2050, that percentage will be almost 40 percent. Instead, they are majority white.
