I’ve committed to walking 10-20,000 steps per day and even earned my 1,000 miles badge. It’s been written up in most major fitness magazines, including Runner’s World. Over the past year, I have been using a fitbit to help me incorporate more activity in my life.

Even free apps like FourSquare reward checking in to locations with badges and titles like “Mayor”. Even if the benefits aren’t tangible, such as those badges you earn in FourSquare, I’m still drawn to do my best to earn them because it’s fun. Do those badges mean anything? Why Not Mirror This At Your Museum? Gamification.

I've been dutifully "checking in" and have earned 10 mayorships (in FourSquare you are made the mayor of a location if you check more frequently than others), many badges, and reached a super user level. And while it is a cool new tool, there are important limitations to consider. Also delayed was another colleague, JD Lasica.
