He is using a tool called " Twibbon " that makes it easy for people to change their avatar to incorporate a visual for a particular cause. See the range of creative expression in the flickr group. Remember the sea of green avatars last summer in support of the Iran ? What do you think?

Creative Commons on Flickr :: flickr.com/creativecommons. The app then allows you to share your photos on a photo-by-photo basis on Flickr, Facebook, and Twitter. Facebook, YouTube, Flickr, and others are coming soon! A website that allows you to create an image with a mosaic of your Twitter Followers’ avatars.

Flickr and Pinterest: 5 Hours Weekly. It increases your generosity score and the exposure of your avatar in the Twitterverse and in the “Interactions” module and thus results in more new followers. Chapter 5 :: Use the Colors of Your Avatar to Design Your Channel. That said, a couple of minor tweaks are necessary.

Flickr Photo by Ghbrett. This made think of whether trust is only built from knowing someone offline or not. The context at Blogpotomac was the question, "Did turning your Twitter avatar green in support of the Iraniian protests" really mean anything. I think the above example shows it might go both ways.
