The Ella Baker Center for Human Rights is a civil rights and restorative justice organization for prisoners and for Oakland young adults. 250,000 Grant Winners. The program also helps everyone build credit scores.

Just owning an independent bookstore is creating a positive force for good, in my book (no pun intended). If the space allows, be a low-cost gathering space for your community to have meetings, readings, exhibit art, post events, etc. Make it easy for people to give away the used books you don't want to purchase from them.

SOUL is a training center based here in Oakland. We just recently moved to downtown Oakland, and we talk about ourselves as a school to build a movement. And in terms of how I got involved with SOUL, I was actually teaching for a very brief period in the Oakland middle schools. I don’t know if I have a favorite book.
