Mail, and Google Docs are all examples of cloud-based applications, also known as software as a service (SaaS). When using a cloud-based email system from your laptop for example, your machine is not doing any of the raw computations, it is simply displaying the results of computations that are happening elsewhere. I live in Google applications (Gmail, Google Reader, Calendar, etc.) You can browse or search the docs from the little drop-down window. Makes it easier if I want to log in using my laptop while on the go. I've been using it as my default on my MacBook and iMac for quite some time now. I'm a developer wannabe at best.

I can migrate their Microsoft Access applications to a free Salesforce account. Now they have no need for local applications or data. They can take them anywhere they need, access all their applications and data, never worry about malware, backups, disaster recovery, etc. I use Google Docs , Zoho Writer , and Office Web Apps.
