How Effective was Crisis Mapping During the 2011 Japan Earthquake? TechPresident : Compared to similar efforts put to use in the 2010 Haiti earthquake, not as consistently. Yet crisis mapping in the immediate aftermath of the Japan earthquake, including an Ushahidi map of Twitter reports, Sinsai.info, was not as critical to response.

The January 12, 2010 catastrophic earthquake in Haiti showed some of the astonishing potential for volunteer-based digital disaster relief. and Sahana Foundation (which hosts a free open source disaster management system), have changed the way disaster relief is being done all over the world. Twitter uses hashtags.

Disasters strike and organizations provide humanitarian aid - it's that simple. Direct Relief International was involved in the Haitian earthquake in 2010 and the Japan earthquake in 2011, providing aid to thousands. They're also currently involved in a very recent disaster relief effort from Hurricane Isaac.
