In June 2009, John decided to sell nearly everything he owned and set out for New York City (via San Diego). I remember leaving for Vegas and making a promise to Joe that I would submit a mashup to the 2009 Change the Web Challenge. The mashup was a map showing where people were volunteering in near-real-time.

One of the best examples of the use of APIs are Google Map mashups. These are using data in your own databases, and grabbing maps from google maps and putting them inside your application. It allows nonprofits free access to data that they would normally not have access to (like mapping data), or would have to pay a lot for.

In the case of Daniel Ben-Horin, the 2009 recipient and co-CEO of Techsoup Global , it's both. The 2009 award was presented to the American Red Cross. The winners were: First Prize Winner ($5,000) -- Social Actions Interactive Map -- submitted by John Brennan. This push might be in the form of innovation, or thought leadership.

Having been bogged down with my own open source CMS tool before 2005, then having taken a break from development, I missed out on the prime years of Drupal’s development. WordPress. There were two different kinds of APIs discussed – the ones that help organizations with interoperability within their organizational systems – getting data from one app to another, and using APIs for things like Google maps mashups. It seemed that only Blackbaud had APIs you have to pay for. at 7:56 am Michelle- Great summary.

The first example is Ushahidi – originally designed as a tool for mapping reports of violence in Kenya after the post-election unrest in 2008.
