I remember in 2005 the Global Voices Summit used IRC as a backchannel -- no so much for people in the room, but for remote participation. to come out of 2008's SXSW Conference was for moderators of panels to use Twitter (or back channel tool) to poll the audience upfront and monitor it in real time. As we saw with the Haiti response, language can be a huge barrier to response rate as we rely on people to help translate messages at an un-approachable rate.

In January, Cristi was named one of the 21 Leaders of the 21st Century for 2008 by Women's eNews. Our age ranges in all of our global training sites range from 19 to 56. I learned to speak the language fluently, and was there at a really intense time in terms of the civil war, and a lot of the political uprisings that were going on.
