Open rates can be an unreliable metric due to spam filters, preview panes and image blocking -- all of which make it hard to know whether someone is actually opening (or reading) an email. Email lists are continuing to grow, though the rate of growth was 17% in 2008. Average gift size across organizations was $71 in 2008.
