I've long admired this museum for its all-encompassing commitment to community co-creation , and the visit was a kind of pilgrimage to their new site (opened in 2008). She did several things over the course of the tour to make it participatory, and she did so in a natural, delightful way. But participatory facilitation can be taught.

This past weekend, in conjunction with our exhibition about Ze Frank's current participatory project, A Show , we hosted " Ze Frank Weekend "--a quickie summer camp of workshops, activities, presentations, and lots of hugging. Or that we take a group photo together at the end of the day. The activities had a really low barrier to entry.

There was Jaime Kopke's Denver Community Museum , which existed for nine months in a Denver storefront in 2008-9 to celebrate visitors' creations. There are a few things about this that I find incredibly interesting: The experience is event-based. The format focuses on intimate experiences. Smaller is not worse.

Games are already highly participatory, but over the last few years game designers have been giving players more control over the gameworld and experience. Spore was released in September of 2008 to huge sales expectations. But Spore is an entirely "creator"-focused experience, which severely limits its potential for adoption.

The Digital Media and Learning Conference is meant to be an inclusive, international and annual gathering of scholars and practitioners in the field, focused on fostering interdisciplinary and participatory dialogue and linking theory, empirical study, policy, and practice. Each fall since 2008 MNN has hosted an annual conference and expo.
