Federal, state and local governments increasingly depend on Social Service nonprofit organizations and, because of that dependency, have been willing to help fund them. government funding accounts for approximately one-third of the annual revenue received by nonprofit organizations, primarily through grants and contracts.

While nonprofits are perhaps most associated with the social sector, organizations within it can overlap with the spheres of business and government. Political organizations such as political action committees (PACs) straddle the line between public and private, accepting private donations in order to influence elections.

Public policy at all levels of government has the ability to threaten the work of all nonprofits (National Council of Nonprofits, 2019). Notably, about 32% of nonprofit funding comes from government contracts and grants. In reality, however, it presents a significant opportunity to increase their impact. A missed opportunity.
