Britt Bravo: In so many of the groups you profiled, the women were using the arts for education, empowerment, or healing. Can you talk a little bit about why they used arts, and why it was an effective tool? BB: Why do you think the arts is such a powerful tool? People write poems, and stand and recite them in public meetings.

Increasingly, rape of women is being used as a tool of war, not just in large scale wars as we saw in the Serbian and Bosnian conflict, but as we saw recently in Kenya and in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. When you hear something like that, I think you begin to get a sense of the power that women actually have to collectively mobilize.
