I watched the news reports from Texas and was horrified at the scale of this disaster. I grew up on the Jersey shore where I’ve been evacuated due to storms, but I have never seen this level of disaster. Here’s a list of suggestions from people in my network: United Way of Houston. YMCA Houston.

If disasters cannot be predicted or planned, is it reasonable to expect a situation where the philanthropic world is prepared to immediately address the pressing needs that surface in affected areas, both short and long-term? Did you know that after five to six months private giving has almost completely stopped to areas affected by disaster?

When we can look at numbers immediately after a disaster, it gives us a unique perspective.
