My contribution to the panel is to provide context about the use of social media in emergency and disaster response as well as an overview of some of the tools we saw deployed last year and we may see in the future. It eventually garnered 45,000 users who took advantage of the easy-to-access tool to place reports.

The head of our group, Patrick Ball, is spending most of this year in the Democratic Republic of Congo, working with the United Nations on a range of human rights issues (of which the DRC has many). Literacy, human rights and the environment are critically important to the future of humanity.

They wanted to create a literacy program for themselves because now there was a school where their children could go to school, but they felt embarrassed that they couldn't support their children because they themselves were illiterate. I think the biggest challenge for us is trying to make hard decisions.
