I was with two close friends who work in social service organizations focusing on homelessness and criminal justice respectively. And we each have specific interests in increasing access, connection, and empowerment of marginalized people. We all work for nonprofits. We all care about making a difference in our community.

Father McKenna Center : The McKenna Center serves the needs of the poor, men, women and children through a variety of programs funded by generous individuals, religious orders and institutions, foundations and government grants. Their use of Facebook was instrumental in winning Sears’ Dads Making a Difference Contest.

Through his nonprofit, “ Technology for People ,” he has dedicated his life to girls (and boys) empowerment through technology. The government run “Remand Houses” are shelters for homeless youth who are runaways, orphans, facing domestic violence at home, or too young to go to jail for a crime.

While I faced a difficult decision culling winners from the forty focused initiatives described in the entries, I selected the following based on their innovative and courageous approaches to a variety of social issues, from new types of housing for the underserved, to animal welfare, to women’s empowerment. We are NOT a shelter.
