Their fate seems set from a young age: Children living in some of the most deprived communities in Cambodia are often denied the chance of an education, trapped in a cycle of poverty with no escape. The Cambodian Children’s Fund (CCF) is changing this and giving these children hope — of an education and a better life.

I’m fundraising for the Sharing Foundation , that supports children and young people in Cambodia. Because my children were adopted from Cambodia and it is a way to give back. The goal is to collect 4 million actions (photos of hands raised, likes on their Facebook campaign page, etc) and present the collective actions to the United Nations Secretary General and the world donor community urging them to put girls’ education as their priority. Tom Watson has written about a remarkable woman in Cambodia, Mu Sochu. I’d like to introduce you to Keo Savon, an orphan from Cambodia from the same orphanage as our daughter. My family is sponsoring her college education through the work of the Sharing Foundation. She graduated this year.

I did a post a few weeks ago on youth programs in TechSoup Global's new Local Impact Map and decided I hadn’t covered this resource nearly enough. Our Local Impact Map. It first works with local community people to see what its children need and then tailors programs that are specific to that locale.

Whether I'm fundraising for Cambodia or Creative Commons , I involve my kids. We have dinner table discussions on why it is important to support causes, particularly programs in Cambodia like the Sharing Foundation. I baked a lot of cupcakes with my mom for those bake sales. But it doesn't involve baking cupcakes.

This year I facilitated several labs, including several for the Knight Foundation Arts Program to learn about the local arts ecosystem in four cities, including Philadelphia, San Jose, Charlotte, and Macon. In the US, I gave workshops at nonprofit conferences in North Carolina, Virginia, Florida, Missouri, California and at SXSW.
