In 2000, our founding patron Nelson Mandela stood on stage at the inaugural Laureus World Sports Awards and declared: “Sport has the power to change the world.” In 2005, a visit to Right to Play in Sierra Leone with skateboarding icon Tony Hawk changed my life. 257,374 had access to a safe and inclusive space.

She has been the recipient of many awards, including Fast Company's 2007 Social Capitalist Award, and the League of Women Voters' Women Who Could Be President Award. I remember a very wonderful woman from Sierra Leone, Sarandabba, saying to me, "You know in a war, women are raped, but Mother Earth is also raped.
