The truth is that, while social media played a role in getting information out quickly, it was Al Jazeera (a traditional media outlet) that provided mass new coverage and fed it to US newsrooms who then repurposed it. The Iran related hashtags also trended on Twitter.

Tonight, I attended a live panel discussion on the question of whether Technology is Really Good for Human Rights, or not. That ethos continued until the last three years or so with issues in Burma, Iran, and China. Communication technologies have always been used for political change, especially with Iran.
