The most successful programs fostered youth empowerment and community leadership in various content areas: agriculture, technology, healing. There is a strong community of Oaxacan artists, dancers, and musicians in Live Oak. She surveyed existing local programs. But there was no such program focused on the arts.

They were using music, dance, poetry, and storytelling, and they were succeeding. Britt Bravo: In so many of the groups you profiled, the women were using the arts for education, empowerment, or healing. Celebrating Women was book number two. In addition to being an artist, performer and dancer, Alli is also a writer whose most recent piece can be found in the Code Pink anthology, Stop the Next War Now. We'll be taking with arts activist Alli Chagi-Starr, the Cultural Arts Director for the Ella Baker Center for Human Rights ' Reclaim the Future Program.
